About Soul

Soulfully serving our community.

Our History

Founded by Life Church Newcastle in 2003 as Soul Cafe, Soul Hub was created with a vision to support vulnerable people in our community with compassion, dignity, and practical care. Starting with serving warm meals from our church, Soul Hub has grown to “more than a meal”, providing a hub of services including food, wellbeing, medical, support, and recovery services.

Many of our guests are experiencing homelessness, social isolation, mental health challenges, addiction, financial hardship or personal crisis. Whatever someone’s story, they are always welcome without judgement at Soul.

Our Model of Support:
A 3 Legged Stool

3 legged stool: Simple, practical support, community, a convergence of help

Soul Hub is not a soup kitchen. We are a compassionate community response to some deep community needs. And, though we do a lot of free hot meals, we are way more than a meal. Soul Hub’s model for supporting vulnerable people is much like a 3 legged stool…

Leg 1: Simple, Practical Support
Leg 2: Community
Leg 3: A Convergence of Help

Leg 1: Simple, Practical Support

In 1998, responding to the deep needs they saw around them, Ken Gibson, Bill Elkin, and their families started serving coffee to vulnerable people. A simple, practical support. Today, we verse on average 187 meals a day and 189 grocery hampers a week. Guests charge their phones at our charging stations and use our cleaned bathrooms. On a hot day, guests enjoy our air conditioning and on a wet day, they come to Soul to dry off because life on the streets is much harder than you think.

Soul Hub Community

Leg 2: Community

For many of our guests, a conversation is transformative to their sense of belonging. At Soul, we have a Guest Support Team whose only role is to connect with guests. Volunteers move around our cafe greeting and engaging guests. For guests who need a little bit more help, Guests Support Coordinators refer, reconnect, and review. And if required, our two Social Workers can advocate for our Guests. A fish tank, newspapers, magazines, library, cafe, music, live plants, TV screens, board games, and art supplies also contribute to the relaxed community feel of Soul Hub.

Leg 3: A Convergence of Help

The sense of belonging and community provided by Leg 2 is a valuable end in itself, but it also acts as a bridge to help guests connect to other services we provide. We refer to our services and programs as our ‘Convergence of Help’. We invite other services and professionals to provide their skills to empower our guests. Services include medical clinic, hairdressers, mental health clinicians, and more. Click below to see the full list of services.

A career break in 2021 gave him the chance to reflect, and he realised he wanted to use his skills to make a positive difference.
