Michael’s New Beginnings at SoulHub

Michael’s journey to SoulHub was marked by hardship and resilience.

After nine months living in a tent in Wollongong, he faced a harrowing time in Sydney where, amidst the chaos, his shoes were stolen. Desperate for change, Michael boarded a train to Newcastle. His first night in the city was spent on the streets, enduring plummeting temperatures in just a thin jacket and torn jeans, without shoes.

The following day, as he walked past SoulHub, a chance encounter would change his course.

  • Unfamiliar with SoulHub, Michael was initially hesitant when approached by a staff member at the entrance. His schizophrenia made new situations particularly daunting. However, reassured by the staff’s kindness and the promise that he’d be safe, Michael stepped inside. He was warmly welcomed and immediately provided with food, having not eaten for two days. SoulHub offered him not only a hot meal but also dry jeans, a warm weather-proof jacket, and a pair of perfectly fitting old Dunlop Volleys.
  • Recognizing his discomfort from a persistent cough, the staff quickly accommodated him in a private space. It was here that Michael met with NDIS outreach workers who were present at SoulHub that day. They helped reconnect him with support services, securing a local case worker who arranged temporary housing for him. Just four weeks later, Michael had moved into semi-independent housing supported by a caring community that helps with his daily living needs. He now has regular access to a doctor and the stability he longed for.
  • Thanks to SoulHub, Michael’s life has dramatically transformed. He reflects on his journey with gratitude, “SoulHub did it all. They kicked it off. I’m quite the success story.” Today, Michael has not only the necessities he lacked—clothes, a bed, and shoes—but also a newfound sense of security and community. His story is a powerful testament to the change that begins with a simple act of kindness and the belief that indeed, at SoulHub, “Everyone is welcome, because nobody is perfect and anything is possible.”
